Fiat's sporty new 124 Spider roadster has been snapped with no camouflage ahead of 2016 release. It's based on Mazda's MX-5
Good news for Italian sports car fans on a budget: Fiat's stylish little 124 Spider has been seen in public with no disguise ahead of its 2016 reveal. The Mazda MX-5-based 124 was confirmed by Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne earlier this year, after our exclusive story revealed the firm's plans.
This is the first time we've spotted the 124 Spider without any cladding, and although the images are blurry the design direction is clear to see. The most noticeable feature is the front-end, with a significantly longer bonnet than the fourth-gen Mazda MX-5 its based on. With similar proportions to a BMW Z4, the 124 gets a jutting jawline and caved in headlamps, while at the side you can see the MX-5 underneath in the doors.
The rear end is competely different to the Japanese roadster, with hints of a mini Dodge VIper in the design. A lip spoiler and twin exhausts show sporting intent, although we expect the forthcoming Abarth version (confirmed by Auto Express earlier this year) to look even more racy.
Fiat 124 Spider: what we know so far
When asked directly by Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show if the new Fiat sports car would indeed be badged 124 Spider, Marchionne checked with his execs if the name had been revealed yet, before asking: “Do we want to do it now?”. A brand exec confirmed the 124 Spider name before Marchionne added: “There you go – a world class premiere right in this room!”.
He declined to confirm whether that model would be a Fiat or Abarth, but Auto Express understands that there will be versions wearing both badges based on the Mazda MX-5 platform.
As part of the joint venture agreement with Mazda, both the Fiat 124 Spider and the Mazda MX-5 are to be made at Mazda’s factory in Hiroshima, Japan. According to our source, the agreement between Fiat and Mazda is that the MX-5 will launch first and take centre stage in 2015, with Fiat’s alternative offering coming 12 months in 2016.
