Fiat's 2016 124 Roadster has been snapped by spy photographers during a promotional photography shoot.
The Italian brand's new convertible shares the same underpinnings as Mazda's new MX-5 Roadster, but these spy shots show that the resemblance isn't just under the skin.
Fiat's new roadster looks to be almost a carbon copy of Mazda's MX-5, except for slight front-end styling tweaks that depart from Mazda's Kodo design language. Its exhausts also are split onto both sides of a boxy rear end that differs from Mazda's dual-pipe treatment on the left side of its car.
The interior of the 124 Spider seen here is almost identical to that of the MX-5, sharing its steering wheel, centre console, touch screen and instrument binnacle.
The roadster will be followed by a high-performance Abarth version that could share its engine with the Alfa-Romeo 4C sports car.
The model was originally set to be sold as an Alfa-Romeo before the brand hand-balled the project to its sister brand, Fiat as the Italian automaker tries to re-launch Alfa Romeo as a premium player.
The new Mazda MX-5 which launched recently in Australia is priced from $31,990 (plus on-roads) and features a 1.5-litre or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that produce 96kW/118Nm and 150kW/200Nm respectively and weighs just over 1000kg.
The Fiat 124 Spider is tipped to be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show in November 2015.
